Section Head, Parasitology

Qualification: Med. Lab. Special - Parasitology
Previously worked in Immunology, Histology and Haematology. Responsible for day to day running of the diagnostic parasitology laboratory.

Sean Hogan
Senior Technician

Qualification(s): Part I and II Science Laboratory Technicians Certificate
Joined UCD in 1980 and has worked in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry Departments. Senior Technician in Parasitology since 1997. Provides technical assistance to teaching, diagnostic and research requirements within the department.

Yvonne Abbott
Section Head, Microbiology

Qualification(s):
City and Guilds of London Institute Science Laboratory Technicians Certificates, Part I and II (Biological Sciences)

Clinical diagnostic experience in Haematology, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Microbiology and Mycology.

Responsible for day to day running of the Diagnostic Bacteriology and Mycology laboratory.

Mary Gleeson
Senior Technician

Qualification(s): Qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist. Holds Associateship (in Virology) of Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences, London.

Does cell culture, virus isolation, chlamydia isolation, electron microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, ELISA tests for feline viruses and canine parvovirus.

Departmental safety co-ordinator. Also responsible for the day-to-day running of the Category 3 laboratory.

Bernadette Leggett
Technician

Qualification(s): BSc (Hons) Biology, NUI Maynooth
MSc. (Agr) Food Science

Previously worked in the National Centre for Medical Genetics, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. Works in both the clinical diagnostic bacteriology and parasitology laboratories. Also provides relief cover in the clinical diagnostic virology laboratory. Provides technical assistance for 3 MVB veterinary microbiology teaching laboratory sessions, and for various research projects. Currently involved in a cryptosporidium project on pigs.

Research Project Title: Development of novel vaccines for liver fluke

Qualification(s): A.B., University of Chicago, M.Sc., University of Florida, Ph.D., Cornell University.

Research interest is in developing novel vaccines for parasites of veterinary importance such as liver fluke.

Postdoctoral researcher

Qualifications: Graduate of NUI Maynooth. PhD from NUI Maynooth in collaboration with DCU

Research Project Title: Vaccines against sea lice of salmon and trout.

Susan Browne

Qualifications: MSc Molecular Medicine (TCD), BSc Biology, NUI Maynooth

Melanie Smith

Qualification(s): BSc Bioanalytical Science
