The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus is extensively involved in the Undergraduate Teaching Programme both to fourth year and final year medical students. This involves didactic introductory lectures on diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, pituitary disorders, reproductive endocrinology and disorders of the adrenal glands etc... In addition the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus participates in the traditional programme of patient based teaching both in formal teaching clinic sessions and also involving medical students in clinical teaching situations, i.e. on the wards and in the Out-Patient Department. The Endocrinology Department is responsible for 5 Out-Patient Clinics per week including 3 Diabetes Mellitus Clinics, a general Endocrinology Clinic and a Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic. There is ongoing involvement of science and medical graduates undertaking further training leading to MSc, PhD and MD degrees. Over the last 2 years PhD degrees have been awarded to 3 of our graduate students participating in the post graduate teaching and research programme. They are Dr. Ursula Fearon, Dr. Dara Clarke and Dr. Eugene Halligan.
