Departmental Profile
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Production is located with the rest
of the Veterinary Faculty in the Ballsbridge Campus, and also at the Lyons
Research Farm at Newcastle, Co. Dublin.
The Department is involved in undergraduate teaching in Veterinary
Medicine and has an interest in a broad range of animal production systems.

Teaching Responsibilities
Staff of the Department teach Animal Husbandry and Production to undergraduate
students of Veterinary medicine in their second and third undergraduate
years. They are also involved, jointly with the Faculty of Agriculture,
in teaching the Diploma and Masters in Equine Studies to graduate students.
Research Interests
The research interests of the Department are in:

Growth and development of follicles on the bovine ovary with the aim of
increasing embryo yield (with Michigan State
University and University College Galway);

Photoperiodic and environmental regulation of seasonal regulation of seasonal
reproduction in ewes (with University of
Michigan);

Nutritional modulation of reproductive efficiency in cattle and sheep;

Manipulation of hormone levels, using the immune system, to influence growth
and behaviour in bulls (with Teagasc, Grange);

Blood typing in cattle and DNA fingerprinting in dogs;

Equine conformation evaluation: linear assessment system;
-
Postpartum anoestrus in beef suckler cows;

The physiological roles of FSH and inhibin;

The effect of stocking density of housed beef cattle on performance and
welfare;
-
The effect of castration method on corticosteroids, immune response, behaviour
and performance.
