Biographical History

Capt. J. Honner was born in 1859 in Clonmel, County Tipperary. His father was Clerk of the Crown and Hanaper in the courts of Tipperary, but also acted as an agent for two or three large estates in the area. He was also an election agent for Lord Charles Beresford.

 

Scope and Content

Photocopied manuscript of an unfinished biography by J. Honner, relating his childhood experiences in Tipperary as son of an estate agent, clerk of the crown and election agent for Lord Charles Beresford. Included are extensive comments on local conditions; the character of the peasantry and role of the clergy; resident magistrates and the Royal Irish Constabulary; with accounts of local elections and of assizes and general observations on education and agriculture.
