Biographical History

Prominent in the re-organisation of the Volunteers after 1916, O’Hegarty was Vice-Commandant in the 1 Dublin Brigade and became Director of Organisation of the IRA in 1920. Pro-Treaty, he was Commandant-General, a member of the Army Council and Director of Intelligence from September 1922. Appointed Secretary to the Executive Council of the Irish Free State in March 1923.

Archival history

The O’Hegarty papers were given by Mrs O’Hegarty to General Richard Mulcahy in 1961 and remained in his possession until the establishment of the Mulcahy Trust and the transfer of the Mulcahy Papers to UCDA in December 1970, at which time the O’Hegarty Papers were transferred also.

IRA and Free State Army cash accounts (1920–22) and some memoranda relating to army and defence matters (1921–2) Secretary to the Executive Council of the Irish Free State: correspondence files relating to the routine work of the office (1923–7). Pamphlets and other printed matter (1902–32).
