Institutional history

The Academic Staff Association was founded in the autumn of 1960 by members of UCD staff with the objectives of ‘improving the quality of university life in Ireland, enhancing the public reputation of university teachers and scholars, furthering the interest of the academic staff of UCD, and representing the UCD staff in all matters affecting their common interest.’ During the early years of its existence, the Association was concerned with social activities, staff amenities, the sponsorship of seminars and dinners and staff facilities in UCD. From the mid-1960s it became involved in wider issues including salaries and pensions, conditions of employment and the relationship of UCD with other universities, including the proposed merger with Trinity College Dublin.
