About the Centre:

The UCD Equality Studies Centre promotes and advances the study of equality and inequality in contemporary complex societies. It was established in 1989 as a hub for interdisciplinary research on in/equality, bringing together expertise from politics, law, sociology, education, geography, business, health systems, communication studies, social policy and social work. It offers a dedicated space for building equality-related research networks and collaborations on a national and international basis.

Its annual programme of events, including public lectures, serves to connect university alumni, interested citizens and scholars from across Ireland who share an interest in equality.  The ESC has thus established an international reputation as a vibrant centre of high-quality research and engagement on equality issues, with a strong track record of building important research collaborations, winning funding, and attracting visiting scholars and speakers from around the globe.

There are currently five research clusters hosted by the ESC: 1) Unequal Societies; 2) Equality and Flourishing; 3) Critical Political Economy; 4) Equality, Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination; and 5) Politics and Change. Each research cluster has its own programme of national and international activities, and invites membership from faculty and graduate students at UCD. To read more on each cluster, please visit the dedicated research cluster pages.

The ESC has a strong membership of UCD faculty and postgraduate students working in the field of equality studies. If you are a prospective PhD student who would like to find a supervisor working on equality or inequality issues at UCD, please visit our members page for more information on our members and their specific areas of expertise.
