Reduce Your Use - Week 2
Lighting

November 2023

This week’s Reduce Your Use theme is lighting. Saving energy can be as simple as switching off a light. Yet, it is something that maybe doesn’t happen quite as often as it could at work or even at home.

In a bid to understand why not, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) surveyed public sector workers on the reasons they personally did not switch off when the lights are not needed. Below are the common responses:

Take a look at the below posters which can be used in office and lab areas to help remind occupants to switch off before they leave:

The Estate Services team switches off lights and equipment in teaching areas before locking buildings for the night, but if you’re working or studying in a space and are leaving before the building closes remember to switch off lights yourself – you can make a difference.

Before the Christmas break, we plan to set a date for a Switch Off Day to encourage everyone to make an extra effort to switch off unnecessary lights and see how much we can save. Look out for further information on this in the next couple of weeks.

Finally, please have a look at this webinar on (opens in a new window)Energy Efficient Lights to find out how much energy and money they can save you at home.
