What will Ireland look like in 2040? National Planning Framework consultation
After a round of initial consultations in summer 2016, the Government have recently launched public consultations for Ireland 2040 – Our Plan. The plan will set a framework and national policy to support the health, well-being, and quality of life for future generations and guide future development and investment decisions.
On Tuesday February 28th 2017, Minister Simon Coveney and his team participated in an open consultation with students, staff and other members of the UCD Community. Chaired by broadcaster and economist, David McWilliams, a panel of invited speakers included event organiser Associate Professor Brendan Williams (UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy), Eamon Ryan (TD, Green Party) and Associate Professor Niamh Moore-Cherry (UCD School of Geography).
After an opening speech by the Minister, Assoc. Prof. Moore-Cherry commented on the need to accept that we are living in a metropolitan century and commended the document for its recognition that Dublin needs to be further supported in its role as Ireland’s global city. She also argued that the only effective way to counter-balance the dominance of Dublin and protect our rural areas will be to build up our second-tier cities as many other European countries are doing. A scatter-gun approach to the development of every small to medium-sized town in Ireland will do more damage in the long run. Associate Prof. Moore-Cherry advocated for geographers “to be included in, and grasp, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute at the plan-making stage. Our ability to think holistically through a spatial lens and to understand the complexity of, and inter-relationships between, places positions us well to positively shape what our island home will look like for the next generation”.
