Position 1

Description

Coarctation of the aorta is one of the most common congenital lesions with up to 6% of all live births with congenital disease. A preferred minimally invasive treatment of coarctation in young children and adults is stenting. Patients present with highly variable anatomy, but currently there is a lack of bespoke stenting options available for this procedure.

Here, we will generate a method for manufacturing patient-specific, bioresorbable stents. 3D models created using clinical images of the aortic coarctation from a patient will serve as a template for patient-specific 3D printed stent design. This process will allow rapid manufacturing of a specific-patient contoured device designed to maximise wall apposition and to improve patency at the coarctation site.

This project is in collaboration with Paediatric Cardiologists at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin (formerly known as Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin) and Dr. Will Ronan, Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, NUI Galway, whose research focuses on computational biomechanics. It is funded by the National Children’s Research Centre.

PD1 Salary: €37,874 – €43,782 per annum

PD2 Salary: €45,041 per annum

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

The UCD Medical Device Design Group is always looking to attract highly motivated candidates to join our interdisciplinary team, developing medical devices that address clinical needs. Our projects focus on the design, development and testing of novel medical devices for a broad suite of clinical indications.

The UCD Medical Device Design Group is an interdisciplinary team with collaborative links nationally to Cúram, the SFI Centre for Research in Medical Devices and internationally to leading laboratories at Harvard University and MIT.

Our projects have significant potential for commercial development and require engineers interest in engaging in commercial exploitation of technology, working closely with clinical and industry collaborators.
