UCD Medicine Clinical Pathway 2022/2023 Outcomes

The School is pleased to announce the appointment, re-appointment or promotion of 100 adjunct clinical faculty within the UCD Medicine Clinical Pathway 2022/2023 programme. Applications to the scheme included 39 first time and 31 promotion applications, of which 14 (45%) were successful. These appointments bring the School’s current adjunct faculty including non-clinical adjunct and visiting academic staff to over 900 individuals.

First introduced in 2008, this adjunct appointment scheme is designed to recognise those clinical staff who contribute strongly to our academic programmes despite having no formal academic staff appointment. Appointments include hospital consultants, general medical practitioners, senior radiographers and advance paramedics who support clinical training within our undergraduate medicine, radiography and emergency medicine programmes as well as who lead or contribute to postgraduate education and/or research.

Of the 34 first time appointments made, 31 were made at the rank of UCD Assistant Clinical Professor/Clinical Lecturer, two were appointed as UCD Associate Clinical Professor and a single applicant appointed as UCD Clinical Professor. Of the 31 promotion applications, 14 successful applications included UCD Associate Clinical Professor (10), UCD Clinical Professor (1) and UCD Full Clinical Professor (2).

Among the senior faculty appointed, promoted or re-appointed in the 2022/2023 UCD Medicine Clinical Pathway were:

Formal applications were assessed by a panel of senior academic staff including representatives from other Irish Medical Schools and were evaluated based on contributions to teaching & learning, research & innovation, and academic & clinical leadership.

Consistent with our commitment to gender equality, an analysis of appointments and promotions by gender was also undertaken. There was no significant gender disparity among first time applications with 53% from Female applicants and 47% from Male applicants. Reflecting the constituency which is eligible for promotion (comprises 1 : 2 female : male), there were 11 promotion applications from female applicants and 20 applications from male applicants. The success rate of promotion applications from female applicants (7 from 11 ; 64% successful) was higher than that of their male counterparts (7 from 20 ; 35% successful).

In advance of the UCD Medicine Clinical Pathway 2023/2024, the School has introduced a number of changes to the administration of the scheme to further streamline the review of applications. First-time and re-appointment applications are being de-coupled from promotion applications. The scheme will be open for promotion applications from October – December 2023 whereas first-time and re-appointment applications are welcomed at any stage throughout the academic year. In addition to meaningful engagement in our teaching and/or research programmes, the School also requires promotion applicants to maintain an active academic profile on the University’s research information management system.

The School would like to thank all our clinical faculty for their continued generous contributions to our academic programmes in the midst of the global pandemic.
