Research

A key focus for the UCD Department of Psychiatry has been the development of research programmes in the areas of self-harm and suicidality, medical education and in clinical psychiatry/health services research. Our faculty have led out on research in these areas and there is an ongoing programme of work.

Prof Kevin Malone led the Suicide in Ireland Survey which examined the experience of families in the area of suicide. Another project by Prof Malone, the Lived Lives has collaborated with an Artist to develop a programme of awareness in the Traveller community, which has a high rate of suicide.

Assoc Prof Anne Doherty has led local, national and international projects examining the characteristics and predictors of self-harm and suicide behaviours, utilising both local data and data from the National Clinical Programme for Self-Harm and Suicide Related Ideation (see research papers here). Prof Doherty also headed a recent research project funded by the National Office for Suicide Prevention examining suicide in the Irish Traveller population.
