Innovative approaches to teaching and learning

Posted: 06 March 2007

UCD has received a €1.9m Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) award to build its capacity for leadership and innovation in teaching and learning. Part of the award will go towards supporting teaching and academic development fellowships geared towards developing policy and practices that will enhance the delivery of modular programmes.

As part of their work, the Fellows will focus on the following areas: Improving the first year experience; Developing new approaches to assessment; Reinforcing linkages between undergraduate and graduate learning; Curriculum development in the modular framework; E-learning and blended learning.

“The fellowships highlight the importance that UCD places on new ideas and practices in education. They recognise and reward the excellence of our academic staff,” said Dr. Philip Nolan, Registrar, UCD.

The initiative is led by Dr. Bairbre Redmond, Vice-Principal for Teaching & Learning at the UCD College of Human Sciences and Ms Elizabeth Noonan, Director of Academic Policy at UCD. They will be working closely with Dr. Sarah Moore, Dean of Teaching and Learning at the University of Limerick and a range of international experts.

The 2-year fellowships are open to all permanent UCD academic staff. The work will be supported through collaborations with similar teaching and learning scholars at the University of Limerick and also with support from visiting international experts.

The SIF award will also be used to support activities which develop Institutional Leadership capabilities at UCD, the implementation of an ‘Enquiry and Problem-based Learning’ approach (to help students develop skills in creative thinking), and activities that will leverage UCD’s modular curriculum to facilitate wider participation in higher education.
