Inclusive Learning

Inclusive Learning Defined

 We define Inclusive Learning as:

facilitating all students to achieve their full potential through engaging curriculum design, teaching and assessment strategies. Inclusive learning approaches value student diversity as a rich learning resource

Approaches to Inclusive Learning

The first approach to facilitating inclusive learning is to use the research-informed strategies of good engaging teaching. These research informed practical strategies together with case studies can be found on this website generally and at the module and curriculum design, teaching toolkit and assessment and feedback sections in particular. These effective strategies per se promote inclusive learning.

The second and parallel approach is to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning and Instruction, see How can I design my curriculum to promote inclusive learning? for further information on the principles of Universal Design.

Action

1. Reflecting on your own experiences as a university student, write the answers to the following questions:

  • What specific things really helped you to engage in learning?
  • How do you use similar strategies with your own students?

2. Reflecting on your own teaching write the answers to the following questions:

  • What are you doing already to facilitate inclusive learning that works well?
  • What are your own additional ideas for making your teaching more inclusive?
