Farm Animal Clients

Farmer standing in a field with black cows behind himThe farm animal clinical studies section of the UCDVH provides a year-round service for the farming community and co-operating veterinary practices throughout Ireland. The Herd Health and Clinical Reproduction units deal mainly with cattle and sheep cases on co-operating farms in Leinster. Much of our teaching programme is conducted on these farms and a problem-solving approach is adopted against a commercial background.

Staff in Farm Animal Medicine are concerned with advances in:

  • Clinical and preventive medicine
  • Herd and flock health management programmes
  • The improvement of fertility in the domestic animal species
  • Food safety and veterinary public health including the control and prevention of foodborne infections and intoxications
  • Environmental health management on farms and in food plants
  • Epidemiology and risk analysis
  • Diagnosis and control of tuberculosis and brucellosis and other major diseases of animals

Facilities include computerized herd health programmes, advanced GIS support, diagnostic ultrasound and other imaging facilities, immunological technology, automated bacteriological monitoring systems for foods and foodborne residue detection systems.
