Over the coming weeks, we'll be hearing from a wide range of members, so join us every Thursday morning, either in-person from 10.45am or online from 11am (see details below), to hear about new environmental, climate and sustainability research and initiatives from UCD and beyond.
Research talk
Mycorrhizae and Shine: Orchids' secret helpers will be presented by Dr Aisling Reilly from UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.
Overview
In Ireland, there are approximately 31 native species of orchid, with the Western Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza occidentalis), being unique to the island. Despite the level of diversity within the orchid family, most orchids depend on microbes for seed germination. Our current knowledge gaps include which microbes form relationships with Irish orchids; if these relationships change over the lifecycle of the orchid; and how relationships differ between different orchid species or between the same species growing in different habitats. This presentation will introduce this topic and the preliminary work that's been completed so far.
