Research talk

Examining the Links between Social Capital, Conflict and Climate Shocks in Somalia will be presented by Dr Caitriona Dowd from UCD School of Politics and International Relations.

Overview

This presentation introduces a three-year research study examining the links between social capital, conflict and climate shocks in Somalia and Somaliland. Focusing on the experiences of internally displaced persons (IDPs), the study sets out to understand how various subgroups of IDPs build resilience toward shocks and stresses through differential access to social capital. The talk will present the research design, and preliminary insights from the inception and formative phases of the study, highlighting the contested definition of internal displacement in the context; the double-edged nature of reciprocity and obligation emanating from strong bonding social capital; and the implications of social capital for different types and phases of crisis.
