Shark 'n' chips? Understanding human impacts on and connections with sharks, skates and rays

Humans and sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) interact in a range of ways, including the reliance of humans of these species for food and income, the significance of some species in traditional cultures and the efforts we make to protect species and understand the roles they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Drawing on findings from research on highly threatened sawfishes on the African continent, and a recent project to collect the first baseline dataset on elasmobranchs in Namibia, Ruth Leeney from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science will highlight some of the many connections we have with these species and why we need more, and more far-reaching conversations on the importance of sharks in our oceans.
