UCD Biodiversity Week identification workshops

Join us in UCD this National Biodiversity Week for a series of beginner level species identification workshops with biodiversity experts. These hands-on sessions will teach you how to spot and identify local plants, birds, invertebrates, and more. Workshops are open to UCD staff, students and the general public.

Birds - Monday 19 May

Explore some of the main bird groups, their habitats and how to identify them. You will put this to use by observing some common species in the field and making a sketch of them to reinforce your new ID skills. With Dr Adam Kane.

Freshwater invertebrates - Tuesday 20 May

Find out how to recognise examples of different invertebrate groups including insects, crustaceans, snails and leeches, and learn about how invertebrates are used as indicators of water quality. With Dr Marcin Penk.

Plants - Wednesday 21 May

Learn how families of plants can be identified, and how early botanists first arranged plant taxonomies in a 'natural order'. With Dr Tamara Hochstrasser.

Bumblebees - Thursday 22 May

An introduction to Irish bumblebees, with a focus on identification of the 6 most commonly found species (the “big 6”) in both the lab and outside. With Dr Dara Stanley.

Earthworms - Friday 23 May

An introduction to earthworms, how to identify them and how they are sampled by scientists. With Prof. Olaf Schmidt and Katie Martin.
