Participants at the 33rd Coastal Ecology Workshop which was held here for the first time

We were delighted to sponsor the recent Coastal Ecology Workshop (CEW) which was held in Dublin for the very first time.

This year’s event, which was held at the Shoreline Hotel in Donabate, Co. Dublin, late last month, was organised by Ragna Hoogenboom and Eliza Fairchild from UCD’s Blue Carbon Group and Trinity’s Coastal Research Group members Dr Erica Terese Krueger, Kevin O’Leary and Jenny Clarke.

Organised by and intended for early career and postgraduate researchers with a focus on coastal ecology, this annual workshop was first held in Kiel, Germany, in 1993.

Its goal is to bring together early career and postgraduate researchers to share their knowledge and gain project feedback, gain experience presenting their research, facilitate meaningful discussions and collaborations, and build connections across a wider European network.

A keynote speaker is featured to inspire the early career researchers during one session of the workshop, and a field excursion is built into the CEW schedule to share the local coastal ecology of the hosting city or university.

This year’s international keynote speaker was Dr Win Everham from Florida Gulf Coast University while Dr Aoife Delaney from the NPWS gave the national perspective.

Among the highlights of the week-long event were field excursions to Turvey Nature Reserve, North Bull Island and Dollymount Strand, presentations and posters featuring multiple coastal ecology interests, a workshop on living flood defences and meeting attendees from 10 countries and 20 universities and institutions.
