Abstract:

Ever since the derivation of the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation showing the existence of solitons people have been trying to extend the analysis to more and more general situations. The scenario in the talk will be about extending the analysis to include an electric field on top of a shallow electrically conducting fluid. We will examine the linear and weakly nonlinear cases for 2D surface waves and derive an expression for a 2D wave under the influence of a moving pressure distribution which result in a fifth order KP equation.
