Witt Rings and Valuations

Abstract:
Given a field complete with respect to a valuation, Springer's Theorem relates the Witt ring (of anisotropic quadratic forms) of the field to the Witt ring of the corresponding residue field. We will give a short proof of a generalization of this result and discuss related examples and calculations. No prior knowledge of either Witt rings or valuations will be assumed.
