Cultural Diversity Week at UCD

Monday 11th – Friday 15th February 2008

UCD, Belfield
Organiser: UCD International Office

Cultural diversity week hosts 1,000 families exhibition

As part of the annual Cultural Diversity Week at UCD hosted by the UCD International Office, the internationally acclaimed exhibition, “1000 Families: The Family Album of the Planet” developed by Suas and Concern Worldwide will be on show at Belfield.

To highlight the benefits of diversity in the world, German photographer Uwe Ommer travelled the globe for nearly four years, taking photographs of over one thousand families. He believed that regardless of where you are in the world the family is the backbone of every society. Family is where we learn, grow, cry, laugh and who we share our life with.

The families he photographed come from many different ethnic backgrounds, but common themes like love and respect emerge from the photographs which make up the exhibition.

“1000 Families” is an exhibition which offers an opportunity to discover that while each family is unique, all are also bound together by universal threads. The exhibition gives us a personal challenge to find our place and our contribution to the world within a global village.

The exhibition is part of a European campaign called ‘Building Unity Through Diversity’.  The campaign is the brainchild of Echos Communication, a Brussels based communications agency that aims to develop the understanding of Africa amongst the European public.

The campaign and exhibition has visited countries such Belgium, Finland, Malta and Kenya, engaging large numbers of people in issue of development, changing perceptions and stimulating debate.

For the remainder of Cultural Diversity week at UCD, over 60 large family portraits will remain on display outside the Daedelus building and 40 more inside the Health Sciences.
