Dublin’s One City, One Book title supported by UCD online lectures

UCD academics in collaboration with Dublin City Libraries have produced a series of online audio podcasts to enrich the experience of reading the book selected for Dublin: One City, One Book 2014.

If Ever You Go: a map of Dublin in poetry and song is a collection of poems, ballads and songs from a range of literary luminaries connected with Dublin. It includes writing by both historical and contemporary figures, among them Swift, Synge, Yeats, Joyce, Kavanagh and Ó Direáin as well as Seamus Heaney, Eavan Boland, Dermot Bolger, Paula Meehan, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Derek Mahon. There are songs and ballads from the city's colonial past, verses by leaders of the 1916 Rising, and portraits of the modern city with its Spire and Luas tram, its Celtic Tiger 'prosperity' and its post-Celtic Tiger challenges.

The first online audio podcast features the poet, Micheal O'Siadhail’s reflections on poems by Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Kennelly and John Montague, among others, whereby he considers the poetry of the Dublin streets and what it tells us about the relationship between the city and its people.

These lectures offer a series of reflections on poems from this anthology,” said Dr PJ Mathews a lecturer in the UCD School of English, Drama and Film, who is the Director of UCDscholarcast. “Each of the four speakers has chosen a particular theme and explores it in relation to a group of poems, reflecting on the richness and variety of these texts.”

A new audio podcast in support of Dublin: One City, One Book will be made available every week on UCDscholarcast during the month of April 2014.

UCDscholarcast is a Digital Humanities project dedicated to the dissemination of academic research in the field of Irish Studies and adjacent disciplines through podcasting.
