Harnessing AI

UCD is Ireland’s leader in AI and computational sciences, at the spearhead of national capabilities to harness the power of transformational technology.

UCD's Data Revolution in Health

Digital health technologies can unlock more equitable and personalised healthcare and strengthen health systems. UCD is home to world leaders in digital healthcare, developing breakthrough research and innovation projects such as AI_PREMie, a revolutionary risk stratification tool for detecting preeclampsia, led by Prof Patricia Maguire.

Prof Maguire also leads UCD AI Healthcare Hub which brings together the growing interdisciplinary community of researchers at UCD engaged in transformative and highly multidisciplinary, data-rich, healthcare-focused research projects - ranging from largescale trans-institutional endeavours to smallscale pilot research aimed at generating key preliminary data for future funding, including the groundbreaking AI_PREMie project.

Making AI work for people

At UCD Centre for Digital Policy (UCD CDP), our researchers ask not what can AI do for us but how should it be used to tackle major challenges and opportunities, if at all? "That means first identifying the problems, framing them clearly, and asking what's actually needed to solve this issue and is AI the right tool," says centre co-director Dr Elizabeth Farries.

She and colleagues at UCD CDP are testing the promises being made about how AI will benefit us against measurable realities, to help shape smarter evidence based policy. Farries is Principal Investigator on Horizon Europe consortium project FORSEE which explores the risks and benefits of AI from a societal perspective, in order to enhance AI capabilities and EU regulatory frameworks.

Advanced UCD Research in AI

Associate Professor Brian Mac Namee is co-principal investigator on the AURA project (Advanced UCD Research in AI) and co-director at the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics - one of Europe's largest AI and data analytics research centres. The need for AI compute has shot up in recent years, he said, snd this demand comes alongside a “step change” in the technology’s capacity.

“AI techniques and models have become more effective – you can just do more with them. The breadth of application areas has grown massive,” he says. Read about the advanced AI research supported by UCD's AURA supercomputer, in an exclusive interview with he and Professor Aonghus Lawler, AURA lead, in Silicon republic.
