AI_PREMie features on RTÉ programme Game Changer: AI and You

Thursday, 16 November, 2023

The Science Foundation Ireland trans-institutional maternity project AI_PREMie features on tonight’s RTÉ programme, Game Changer: AI and You, which examines the increasing power and influence artificial intelligence will have on our lives.

AI_PREMie uses artificial intelligence to disrupt diagnostic practices in preeclampsia, a dangerous pregnancy condition responsible for over 70,000 maternal deaths and 500,000 foetal deaths worldwide every year. Professors Patricia Maguire, Fionnuala Ní Áinle and Jennifer Donnelly feature on the programme.

“Artificial intelligence is going to transform healthcare,” says Professor Maguire of the University College Dublin AI Healthcare Hub. “Our research merges AI, biomedical science and the best clinical science, bringing all of that information together and giving it to the clinician so that we can augment their intelligence and hopefully enable them to make better decisions and save more lives of mothers and babies.”

Game Changer: AI and You is a one-hour documentary made in partnership with Science Foundation Ireland for Science Week. Its presenter, journalist Anne-Marie Tomchak, examines how this technology is transforming human experience and how we need to adapt to cope with AI’s increasing power and influence on our lives.

The programme examines the positive developments in areas like health, education and climate action, as well as touching on the negatives – the scourge of misinformation and deep fakes, the threat to jobs, the existential concern around artificial intelligence becoming more intelligent than us and the fact that our ability to determine what is real or fake is being increasingly compromised by the capabilities of AI.

The potential of AI to solve maternity problems is also explored. Along with featuring the great promise of AI_PREMie for improving preeclampsia outcomes, presenter Tomchak believes artificial intelligence could have saved her from experiencing the pain of pregnancy loss.

Airing Thursday, November 16 at 10.15pm, RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
