Pre-Hospital Immediate Care Skills at Ireland's Centre of Excellence: Providing Immediate Care Courses for 25 years

The Immediate Care Cardiac, Trauma and Paediatric courses are designed to meet the needs of General Practitioners and other healthcare professionals who may encounter life threatening emergencies in the pre hospital environment. See below for more details on each course.

Faculty: include General Practitioners, Nurses, Ambulance Service Paramedics and Advanced Paramedics
Locations: Courses are delivered at various venues across the country and may be arranged on request
CPD: All courses are approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Fees: Immediate Care Courses: €250 (discounts apply if one person books all three courses or if a second person from the same practice (GP or PN) books the same course.  
BLS: €80 |Anaphylaxis for Healthcare Providers: €120
Refund Policy: Fees may be refunded for bookings cancelled more than two weeks before the course date. If bookings are cancelled within two weeks of the course we are happy to move your booking to another available date.

Basic Life Support and Anaphylaxis for healthcare providers courses are may also be available on request and added to the website for general booking

IMMEDIATE CARE CARDIAC

The aim of the course is to provide participants with the clinical competence to manage life-threatening cardiac related emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is based on refreshing the participant’s knowledge of the chain of survival, the recognition and management of life threatening arrhythmias, the roles of individual team members in managing cardiac arrest and the administration of anti-arrhythmic and other cardiac medications. The course will focus on practical skills such as:

  • Management of life threatening emergencies
  • Integration of critical procedures in a simulated emergency situation
  • Basic and advanced airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Use of Automated External Defibrillator

We recommend that candidates hold a current Basic Life Support Certificate before attending Immediate Care Cardiac Courses.

IMMEDIATE CARE TRAUMA

Immediate Care Trauma Courses equip participants to manage trauma related life-threatening emergencies in a pre-hospital setting. The course content is a mixture of sessions dealing with the principles of management of serious trauma and participation on a range of skill stations. Much of the day is spent on skill stations allowing sufficient time for hands-on practice of skills and familiarisation with the equipment needed to manage and stabilise a trauma patient. The standard course is planned around road traffic accident procedures, planning and preparation. Concepts learned in this module are however applicable to any trauma situation. 

The course will focus on practical skills such as:

  • Dealing with head injuries and the multi-system trauma victim
  • Primary and secondary patient surveys
  • Spinal Immobilisation
  • Airway management in a trauma patient
  • Fluid resuscitation
  • Close teamwork with the emergency services

 

 

 

IMMEDIATE CARE PAEDIATRICS

The aim of this course is to offer clinicians, Doctors , Nurses, Advanced paramedics the opportunity to become more confident and competent in dealing with serious paediatric emergencies in the pre-hospital environment. The format of the day is a combination of lectures, skills stations, workshops and small group scenarios.

Topics include:

  • BLS/choking/AED use
  • Airway and ventilation skills
  • Respiratory emergencies
  • Pain management
  • Sepsis / Shock management
  • Neurological emergencies
  • Management of anaphylaxis
  • Paediatric calculations

There is a strong focus on hands on skills practice. The clinical practice guidelines published by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council will provide core background material for the day.

ANAPHYLAXIS FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

In response to the H1N1 national vaccination programme UCD CEMS developed this programme.

On completion participants should be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and be familiar with the treatment and drug doses appropriate for adults and children.
The format is a combination of lectures, skills stations and discussion groups
Candidates typically are doctors and nurses working in public health, general practice and occupational healthcare settings.
The course runs over 4 hours and is approved for CPD
