BA in Linguistics

Why study Linguistics?

Linguistics programmes are particularly suited to the development of a range of key skills such as critical thinking, evaluation of evidence, analytical skills, pattern recognition, research ability, time management skills, expression (oral and written) and critical thinking.

What will I study?

The modules in Linguistics at UCD provide insights into several areas of linguistics such as syntax and morphology, phonetics and phonology, semantics and pragmatics, sociolinguistics and language change. They explore the main building blocks of language and how it is that language works and interacts with other cognitive and social functions. They provide students with a sound knowledge in the main theoretical approaches in Linguistics, data collection and data analysis tools and methods in Linguistics.

All modules can also be taken as general requirements by students who do not intend to major in Linguistics.

Leaving Certificate: Passes in six subjects including those shown above, of which two must be minimum HC3.

*A-Level and other candidates from outside the Republic of Ireland are usually exempt from the Irish Language requirement.
