Elective modules in T2

We are delighted to introduce our four elective modules for Trimester 2, 2023/24.

FR10140: Paris

Online: Monday & Wednesday 5-6pm

Paris has long been an iconic city in global terms. This Elective module (delivered entirely online) provides UCD students from across all disciplines with expert snapshot insights into aspects of the development and essence of Paris: the City of Light.

This module is a novel way of immersing yourself once again in French language, culture, literature and ideas, via a variety of weekly topics. Each week, UCD French and Francophone Studies lecturers will present Paris through a new lens, with focus on a wide variety of topics (e.g. Mapping Paris; Paris on screen; Paris and Music; Paris in poetry; 18th-century Paris; Revolutionary Paris; Dubliners in Paris; Africa in Paris; Modernity through Art; Culinary Paris and much more).

It is essential to have studied French to a lower intermediate level before taking this module.

PORT10090: Portuguese Film & Fiction

Face-to-Face | In Classroom: Tuesdays 11-12 & Thursdays 12-1

This module examines 20th and 21st-century film and literature of the Portuguese-speaking world. The selected cultural objects serve as vehicles for a deeper understanding of some major political and social shifts that have impacted the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world. This module is designed for non-specialists so you do not need to be familiar either with Portuguese language, writing or films before taking this module.

ITAL10110: Italy

Online: Tuesday 5-7pm

This is an Elective module designed as an introduction to ITALY from a variety of perspectives. It is designed for non-specialists so you do not need to be familiar either with Italian language or with the country of Italy before taking this module.

GER10150 German History on Screen [in classroom]

In classroom: Thursdays 1-2pm & Fridays 2-3pm

This is an introductory module for students interested in German culture, history and film. It focuses on a number of key events and figures in German history of the twentieth century, exploring how they have been portrayed in recent popular German-language films. Films will be in German with English subtitles.
