Thinking Creatively student visit to UCD

Thinking Creatively

In April 2024 Dr Fionnuala Walsh organised a ‘Thinking Creatively’ event with the colleagues across the College of Arts and Humanities. This was a revival of a previous outreach initiative established by Professor Paul Rouse which had been suspended following the pandemic. This brought approx. 50 secondary school pupils from 3 schools to UCD. The event was held again on a small scale in May 2025 with one of UCD's community link secondary school, and again received very positive feedback from the school pupils and the teachers involved. At these events, the school pupils attended workshops run by faculty from the Schools of History, English Drama & Film; Classics, Languages, Cultures and Linguistics; Art History; and the Creative Futures Academy. They visited UCD Library in a joint session with Special Collections, and the Classics Museum and received campus tours. These events were supported by the Student Access Leaders who greatly contributed to the events’ success. We hope and anticipate that these campus visits will lead to expanded applications for UCD from students from non-traditional backgrounds and greater awareness of pathways such as HEAR and Open Learning.

Shakespeare Day

UCD Shakespeare Day

In our annual UCD Shakespeare Day in March, we bring Sixth Year students from local link schools to UCD for a day of all things Shakespeare! Focusing on the year’s Leaving Certificate Shakespeare play, students are introduced to new critical approaches to Shakespeare, engage with rare books in UCD Special Collections, and experience what it is like to study English literature at college. There are short lectures and interactive learning experiences on Shakespeare’s language, characters, themes, and contexts, all led by experienced lecturers in UCD School of English, Drama and Film. Students who have attended to day have appreciated the opportunity to experience the campus, hear different talks, work together in groups, participate in a range of learning activities, share their thoughts, and learn from each other. For the lecturers, it is a pleasure to share our passion for Shakespeare with second level students. We join with Prospero in saying:
‘And to thee and thy company I bid / A hearty welcome.’ (Shakespeare, The Tempest, 5.1.121-22)

Thanks to UCD Access and Lifelong Learning and UCD School of English, Drama and Film for the financial support.
