Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates
8th Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates (BMMC)
History
Between 1988 and 2001, annual meetings dedicated to the chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates were held in the Research Centre Borstel and University of Rostock, respectively, Germany. These meetings created a platform for the presentation of the research performed by young researchers from the above institutions, as well as by colleagues from other institutions in Eastern Europe. It was decided in 2001 to merge both symposia to create The Carbohydrate Workshop, which alternated annually between Borstel and Gustrow. Meetings in Borstel focused on the investigation of natural products and medicinal chemistry of carbohydrates, while meetings in Gustrow were dedicated to synthetic carbohydrate chemistry.
The German-Polish-Russian Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates was founded in Borstel in 2000, and created a second platform for the exchange of the latest knowledge in the field of carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry. In 2004, during a meeting in Poland, it was agreed to merge The Carbohydrate Workshop and the German-Polish-Russian Meeting on Bacterial Carbohydrates to form the biennial Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates, which has been successfully realised since then.
