Venous thromboembolism & Survivorship Studies Open at the UCD Cancer Trials Cluster

A navy thumbnail against a yellow background. The text reads: New studies ASTER-ANT-007 and POST. For people with: ASTER ANT-007: Cancer-related venous thromboembolism & POST: Any cancer type

We are pleased to announce the opening of two new exciting studies at the UCD Cancer Trials Cluster clinical sites, St Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. These studies aim to treat cancer-related venous thromboembolism (VTE) and explore experiences of people with cancer and the language used to describe them.

ASTER ANT-007

This is a Phase 3, multicenter, randomized, open-label study comparing the effect of abelacimab relative to apixaban on venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence and bleeding in patients with cancer associated VTE (ASTER).

We are accepting national referrals for the ASTER ANT-007 VTE study. If you are interested in this study, please discuss with your medical teams.

What do individuals known to palliative care and oncology services think about the terminology used to describe them? (POST)

The term cancer survivors is widely used but has different definitions. One definition describes cancer survivors as individuals from the time of diagnosis throughout their lives, which includes people living with cancer and people free of cancer. The views of some groups included in this definition of "cancer survivors" have rarely been assessed, including those with cancer on anticancer treatment and those known to palliative care.

This is an international multi-centre international observational study with collaborators in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The UCD Cancer Trials Cluster is collaborating with Prof Andrew Davies (UCD Professor of Palliative Medicine) and Amy Taylor (Palliative Medicine SpR and Research Fellow) to examine the how people with cancer view the language used to describe them; language which may have important implications for how care services are utilised.
