    Why Critical Infrastructure Matters - The Facts

    Disasters
    According to the United Nations (2014), disasters affected 4.4 billion people between 1994 and 2013, claiming 1.3 million lives and generating more than US$2 trillion in economic losses.
    In the EU
    In the EU, from 1980 to 2020, natural hazards affected nearly 50 million people and costed for Member States an average of €12 billion per year. Future predictions in this regard for critical infrastructure are concerning.
    Critical Infrastructure
    Annual damage to Europe’s critical infrastructure could 10-fold by the end of the century in business-as-usual scenarios due to climate alone, from the current €3.4 billion to €34 billion
    Support
    For reference of critical infrastructure importance, power outages alone cost US households more than 150 billion dollars per year, and in average approximately 500k people are affected by outages daily in the US.
    Connections
    Transport infrastructure binds society together. If we take Australia, only in bridges, it has ~53,000 with an estimated replacement value of ~$200 billion. Most is facing significant age/future uncertainty challenges.
