The interplay of higher education and humanitarian practice in twentieth century Ireland.

Dr Ellen Regan, University College Dublin

Dr Ellen Regan is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the UCD School of Education. She is a primary school teacher with 18 years teaching experience. She has participated in education focused volunteer projects in Malawi, India, and Haiti. Her research interests are the history of education, international development, volunteerism, and teacher identity.

Webinar Details

This seminar will explore the relationship between higher education and humanitarian practices. Excerpts from qualitative interviews will highlight the connection between the history of education and humanitarian action. The place of the Sustainable Development Goals within higher education and the potential of humanitarian action to impact student life will also be explored. A broad interpretation of humanitarianism which includes concepts such as international volunteerism and global citizenship will be adopted.
