Title of PhD: eHealth Interventions to Support Self-Management in those with Musculoskeletal Disorders: ‘eHealth: It’s TIME

PhD Summary

Accessibility and sustainability are key challenges facing musculoskeletal healthcare services. While self-management support is recommended for many MSDs, frequent clinical contact is not feasible. This PhD project aims to co-design and develop a user-centred, eHealth-mediated self-management support prototype for people with MSDs.

This PhD project utilised a comprehensive and stepwise development process informed by existing design and development frameworks and guidelines. The first study, a comprehensive scoping review including 87 studies illustrated a lack of co-designed eHealth-mediated self-management support interventions despite numerous calls to utilise a more user-centred design approach. Study 2 explored key stakeholders’ experiences and attitudes towards the use of eHealth along with user-specific design requirements. The final study involved numerous iterations of intervention content and development to deliver an eHealth-mediated self-management support prototype that users would find acceptable, useful, and meaningful, with the potential to affect their quality of life. Optimised in preparation for feasibility testing, efficacy testing and implementation, the final eHealth: It’s TIME intervention will have the potential to impact people living with MSDs, improve eHealth design and development processes, improve treatment access, and finally impact the way musculoskeletal healthcare can be delivered in the future.
