A Lasting Memento: Farewell to the Terrace

Farewell to the Terrace is published to mark the occasion of University College Dublin’s departure from Earlsfort Terrace after 124 years. It is a celebration of the many students and staff who were educated, worked and taught there.

Each of the three sections of the book reflects on a particular facet of the Terrace and its stories. While one book cannot capture all the rich history and folklore, it is hoped that these pages will evoke fond memories for the reader.

Professor Donal McCartney and Dr Christine Casey look at the history and architectural heritage of a building that was the site of many pivotal events in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland.

Reminiscences of student life at the Terrace are recounted by Conor Brady, Maeve Binchy, Gerry Horkan and Sean Dixon. They tell of their involvement in sport and university societies as well as the impact of political, cultural and social change during the period.

Professor Muiris X FitzGerald and Professor Vincent McCabe give personal perspectives on academic life, and the developments that laid the foundations for the modern UCD.
