(opens in a new window)Professor Susi Geiger has been named the 2025 Distinguished International Scholar by the (opens in a new window)Irish Academy of Management, marking the first time an Irish-based academic has received the prestigious honour.
A leading international expert on markets, organisations, and society, Professor Geiger is widely recognised for her groundbreaking studies on digital and pharmaceutical markets and for her leadership in reimagining the social role of business research.
A full Professor of Markets, Organisations and Society at UCD College of Business, Professor Geiger was among 32 European Research Council (ERC) grantees chosen to act as ambassadors for the international body earlier this year.
One of Ireland’s most influential academic voices, Professor Geiger’s work bridges business, ethics, and social responsibility, exploring how research can foster care, morality, and societal impact.
To date she has secured over €10 million in research grants, including a €2 million European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant, making her one of Europe’s most accomplished social scientists.
“This recognition not only celebrates Professor Geiger’s remarkable contributions to international scholarship but also underscores Ireland’s growing leadership in ethical, socially engaged research,” said Associate Professor Margaret Heffernan, Chair of Irish Academy of Management (IAM).
The leading professional association for management studies on the island of Ireland, IAM aims to promote the advancement of research and education in the field of organisation and management studies.
It launched its ‘Distinguished International Scholar’ series in 2020 to honour the achievements of outstanding individuals from the international management education and research community, whose work has significantly impacted the field.
The inaugural Scholar was Professor Tom Kochan of MIT Sloan School of Management, and other awardees include Professor Roy Suddaby, Winspear Chair of Management at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada, and Professor Jean Bartunek, Carroll School of Management, Boston College.
As the 2025 winner, (opens in a new window)Professor Geiger will deliver a keynote lecture in conversation with Dr Nicole Gross, National College of Ireland, hosted by University College Dublin.
Titled ‘Enacting an Ethics of Care in Academic Research’, the discussion will explore how scholars can integrate an ethics of care into their research, offering practical guidance and personal reflections on the importance of moral responsibility in academia.
“Integrating an ethics of care into academic research means rethinking how we relate to our research participants, our peers, and society at large,” said she said.
“It calls for scholarship that is rigorous yet compassionate, analytical yet humane - and for institutions that empower researchers to pursue impact through empathy as well as intellect.”
Alongside her role as an ERC ambassador, Professor Geiger is also a member of the World Health Organization’s Technical Advisory Group on Pharmaceutical Pricing Policies.
Her extensive publication record spans more than 80 international peer-reviewed journals and numerous award-winning books, including “Healthcare Activism: Markets, Morals, and the Collective Good” (Oxford University Press, 2021) and the forthcoming “Peak Pharma” (Oxford, 2025).
