Textures, Tastes and Colours of the Bog events

Collaborative arts project Gnáthóga Nádúrtha held a series of events in autumn 2023 to mark the end of the first phase with a rotating community engagement event at each of the three sites, Drummin Bog, Carlow; Ballydermot Bog, Kildare; and Girley Bog, Meath.

The event programme focused on expanding connections with human and nonhuman communities of the bog. Each artist unearthed a physical expression of their work on the project and their local peatland – a Butter Firkin, a Bog Cabinet of Curiosities and a replica Ganger’s hut.

These objects converse with each other and also provide a means to engage and tell stories about the places and the peatlands inspiring these actions.

Workshops for a National Centre of excellence and a summary of policy makers

The primary audience for this event is: representatives from state agencies, funding agencies, policy or political decision makers, executive members of peatland-related organisations and farmers groups, and principal investigators/funded investigators.

Dr Florence Renou-Wilson will be presenting amongst other peatland experts to talk about the ecosystem services of healthy peatlands.

Power to the Peatlands European Peatlands Conference, Antwerp, 19-21 September 2023

This landmark conference celebrated the end of the Interreg North-West Europe project Care-Peat and what delegates hope will be the continuation and beginning of new cooperative peatland projects throughout Europe. The conference was huge in scope with many parallel sessions, workshops, a lively poster session, and networking events. The conference confirmed there is much to be excited and hopeful about for the future of peatlands in Europe. But so much remains to be done.
Peat Hub Ireland presented in the session “Restoration and conservation strategies and priority setting”, chaired by Dr. Terry Morley, alongside Irish projects Irish Peatland Resilience and the RePeat project. The poster session also featured the work of many Irish Early Career Researchers and colleagues at projects such as AI2Peat, WaterLANDS, Wild Atlantic Nature and Peatlands and People.
