Prof Kalpana Shankar

Full Professor

UCD School of Information and Communication Studies

Kalpana is a Professor of Information and Communication Studies whose research broadly examines how data and documentation practices and systems reflect and shape the larger society, culture, and institutions where they are enacted. Drawing on perspectives from information studies and Science, Technology, and Society (STS), she is particularly interested in what is often called 'research on research,' with potential for far-reaching impact across many scientific disciplines and sectors. Kalpana's current work includes a study of peer review at Science Foundation Ireland, funded by SFI itself, specifically focused on science policy and research on research.

Remember you don't have to tackle this journey alone. When in doubt, trust your instincts but don't be afraid to draw on the wisdom of your mentors, friends, and confidantes. They will be essential in lifting you up and encouraging you.  And be that support system for other people as well.

Kalpana is also co-lead on a grant from Worldwide Universities Network to learn more about academic workers and wellbeing during COVID-19. She joined UCD School of Information and Communication Studies in 2011 from Indiana University-Bloomington’s School of Informatics and Computing. Her early research, which is still is still widely cited, focused on paper records, while her current work considers the whole social life of data, in the data-intensive contemporary world.
