Prof Niamh Nowlan

Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering

UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Niamh is a leading biomedical engineer whose work focuses on the role of mechanical forces in prenatal and postnatal development of the bones, joints and spine. Her research is contributing to a better understanding of why babies and children suffer from conditions like developmental dysplasia of the hip and metabolic bone disease of prematurity, and our goal is to develop better diagnostic and treatment strategies for such conditions.

She has obtained approximately €3.5 million in research funding as a Principal Investigator, including a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant. Her research has attracted numerous national and international awards, including the S.M. Perren Award from the European Society of Biomechanics (2018), the Bioengineering Society UK (Bioeng UK) Early Career Scientist Award (2016) and the Engineers Ireland Biomedical Research Medal (2007).
