External Transfer to Autumn Trimester, Stage 2 or Stage 3

Am I eligible?

You must have the following:

  • All the subject entry requirements for the course. If you didn't have these in your school-leaving exams, it may be possible to meet them from your university examinations (see(opens in a new window)Transfer Policy).
  • You must have at least 300 points in the Leaving Certificate and be either:
    • within 30 points of the class you want to enter (so if you want to enter stage 2 in 2024, you must be within 30 points of that required to enter the course in 2023)
      or
    • within 60 points of the class you want to enter AND have achieved a grade of 2.1 Honours or better in the stage preceding the one you want to enter.

See Appendix A of the (opens in a new window)Transfer Policy regarding alternative entry routes e.g. HEAR, DARE, QQI-FET etc.

  • Passed the equivalent of 60 ECTS credits in each stage preceding the one you want to enter, with sufficient modules and grades relevant to the new programme and stage you hope to enter.

How many places are there?

The number of places is very small and depends on the numbers who withdraw or fail to progress. For many programmes there will be no available places.

How will I be assessed?

Usually there are more applicants than available places. Admission is competitive and there is no guarantee that any application will be successful.

If you are eligible you will be assessed on the basis of the compatibility of your modules and overall academic performance. The assessment may also include your school-leaving results or other relevant criteria.

How do I apply?

Open the list of courses with places available and use the link beside the appropriate course. Not all courses will have places available to open for applications.

After the closing date, all complete submitted applications will be screened by Admissions. Applications which meet the minimum requirements (as outlined above in the "Am I Eligible?" section) will be sent to the College/School Offices for consideration by the relevant Programme Board. Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet the minimum requirements cannot be considered.

Application Dates

Subject to availability of places, applications will open on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. The closing date is Wednesday, 12 June 2024. Incomplete applications will not be considered - your application, including application fee, must be submitted by the closing date.

Internal and readmission applicants do not need to provide their examination results, because these can be accessed by Admissions internally.

Note for external applicants: If your results will not be available by 12 June 2024, you must provide your results release date in the application form. You may provide your transcript of results up to close of business on Friday, 28 June 2024. All other items must be provided by the closing date (12 June 2024). Applications with results provided after 28 June 2024 can only be considered if places remain following initial offers.

Subject to availability of places after initial offers, late applications may be considered in August 2024. Please note that registration typically starts from mid-August so any successful late applicants are likely to be late joining registration processes.

If you are considering applying for a transfer, please check the fees implications at www.ucd.ie/fees.

Some programmes will not normally consider applicants who have been unsuccessful in a similar programme - full details are on the restrictions page.

All offers of a place are subject toUCD's Terms and Conditions of Offer. In line with the(opens in a new window)Admissions Policy, offers for taught programmes will not be made after the third week of a trimester. Deferral or Leave of Absence is not permissible for the trimester following acceptance of a transfer/re-admission offer.

In some cases, students may wish to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning in addition to that granted by the transfer process (see Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy).

All students must comply with the regulations of the University.

The above is summary information only. Full regulations are included in the (opens in a new window)Transfer Policy.
