Seminar with Professor David Vitale of the University of Warwick
Professor David Vitale of the University of Warwick visited the Centre in November 2024 as part of a discussion of his new book, Trust, Courts and Social Rights. Published by Cambridge University Press, the book proposes a new framework for judicially enforcing social rights that is rooted in public trust in government or 'political trust'. Taking the concept of trust as its core concern, the book explores how trust is understood and conceived across a variety of disciplines, including philosophy, sociology, psychology and political theory. It makes new arguments based on this about how social rights can be enforced, using cases from Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America to illustrate how this framework operates in practice.
Professor Vitale delivered a lecture on this new model which was followed by a questions and answers session with members of the Centre.
