Breaking Patterns of Conflict 2007-10 and John Whyte Archive

Breaking Patterns of Conflict 2007-10 and John Whyte Archive  (opened 2018)

Led by John Coakley and Jennifer Todd. This set of projects, generously funded by the Irish Research Council, and – previously – by the John Whyte Trust Fund and the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust -  generated a large archive of semi-structured interviews and witness seminars on key areas of British-Irish negotiations from 1969-2019. Well over 200 senior politicians and civil servants involved in peace and settlement negotiations from UK, ROI, NI and US participated in the research. Approximately half of the archive is open in 2019, and the rest will progressively be opened to researchers in accordance with the embargoes set by respondents.

Coakley and Todd's new book (opens in a new window)Negotiating a Settlement in Northern Ireland gives an authoritative overview of the process and the materia.
