UCD Discovery partner with IEAT Minais Gerais University, Brazil

UCD Discovery is delighted to partner with the Institute of Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT) at Minais Gerais University, Brazil, on an exciting collaboration as part of the international University Based Institutes of Advanced Study (UBIAS) network aimed at fostering global scientific exchange. The Discovery IEAT Technical Staff Exchange Program enables technical staff from both institutions to work across borders, sharing knowledge, resources, and innovative ideas.

Dr Niamh Shaw in Antarctica

Though freezing cold on deck as the ship made its way towards Antarctica, Dr Niamh Shaw was too transfixed to notice. For there, in the deep blue Southern Ocean, right before her eyes, a whale surfaced with a loud spurt of air. Then another and another: a whole whale family.
“You find yourself crying because there are no words,” says the Irish space reporter and climate activist. “You feel a very strong connection to the planet that almost feels parental.”

Ana Le Chevillier, Clinical Research Manager of AI_PREMie, is a finalist in the 2023 Young AI Role Model of the Year at this year’s AI Ireland Awards.
AI_PREMie is the multi-award winning decision support tool for diagnosing the dangerous pregnancy condition preeclampsia. It is the flagship project at University College Dublin’s AI Healthcare Hub (AIHH), which Le Chevillier also manages.

AI_PREMie has won the AI Innovation of the Year at the inaugural Public Sector Digital Transformation Awards, which celebrate the incredible achievements of the Irish public sector digital transformation.
The black tie gala event was held in Dublin's Shelbourne hotel.

UCD’s NAIXUS membership “puts Ireland on the map”

UCD has been awarded membership of NAIXUS, a global network of Artificial Intelligence Excellence Centres in Sustainable Development. "UCD has joined a growing list of partners from over 40 universities, institutes, and foundations worldwide who will collaborate on harnessing AI to achieve the United Nations SDGs," says Prof Patricia Maguire.

“If I go on a hike, my legs could be killing me for a week.”

Ashleigh Kiernan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) aged 7, in December 2010. Her mother noticed “little purple spots” appearing on her skin, says Ashleigh, which were quickly identified as the petechiae rash that can be, she adds, “one of the signs for leukaemia”.

"After chemotherapy I was given a 5% chance of fathering a child - it’s a miracle.”

“Miracles do happen,” says Karl Corcoran, 25, from Longwood, Co. Meath, as he and his partner Leah prepare to welcome their first child this month. Before he had even begun treatment for his High Grade B-Cell Lymphoma in January 2021, Karl says he was given a 5% chance - “absolute best case scenario” - of fathering a biological child.

Prof Maguire explains that her research "merges artificial intelligence, biomedical science and also the best clinical science, bringing all that information together and giving it to the clinician so that we can, if you like, augment their intelligence at a particular time so that they can make hopefully better decisions and save the lives of mothers and babies."

UCD Discovery welcomed Asieh Golozar as their first Global Visiting Professor of 2023. Professor Golozar is Director of Clinical Research at the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Center, Northeastern University (NU).
