Celebrating the Journey: Farewell to Our GDIC Students

We had the pleasure of meeting with GDIC students for a farewell lunch, where they shared their reflections on their time in Ireland. The event was attended by Programme Directors Prof. Olaf Schmidt and Dr. Aisling Reilly, along with the China Joint Colleges Team.

GDIC Students Won the Special Prize in MCM/ICM

The results of the 2025 American (International) Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) were announced recently. A total of 24 teams from SCAU participated in this competition, winning one American Mathematical Society Special Award (AMS Award), one Outstanding Winner Award (Special Award), one Meritorious Winner Award (Third Level Award), five Honorable Mention Awards (Fourth Level Award) and 14 Successful Participant Awards.

Genome-specific association study for exploration of variability in hemp

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a multi-purpose crop. Hemp is genetically diverse, which can make research and agriculture challenging. In this new study, Susanne Schilling (UCD) and her team in collaboration with Kazusa DNA Research Institute (Japan) were able to use the genetic variability of a single plant to gain insights into genetic loci important for agricultural traits by developing a novel mapping method, genome-specific association study (GSAS).

I am Dr. Alessandra Marcon Gasperini an Italo-Brazilian academic with a career built at the intersection of food sciences, microbiology and analytical chemistry. My academic foundation includes an MSc in Food Sciences (2014) from the 2nd best university in Brazil, UNICAMP, and a PhD in Agri-food & Environment from Cranfield University, UK (2019).

Bats’ exceptional ability to tolerate coronaviruses and other pathogens without succumbing to illness stems from unique evolutionary adaptations in their immune systems. A landmark study published in Nature reveals that bats exhibit a higher density of genetic innovations in immune-related genes compared to other mammals, with the interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) playing a pivotal role.

Prof Dolores O'Riordan opened the session by setting the context of the China Joint Colleges regarding the Global Engagement Strategy, and Prof Paul Fanning gave a high-level summary of the three colleges.
