UCD Wi-Fi changes - make the switch to eduroam

Thursday, 4 September, 2025

As part of our ongoing commitment to data security and service quality, changes are coming to the way you connect to Wi-Fi services on campus. These changes will be implemented on a phased basis over the next six months.

What is Changing?

  • The UCD Wireless WiFi network will be phased out in all campus buildings over the coming months. This change has already been successfully implemented with the Graduate School of Business campus in Blackrock.
  • Staff and students will need to use the eduroam Wi-Fi network in order to access UCD systems over Wi-Fi. If you are already doing so, you do not need to take any action. Anyone not yet connected to eduroam can join by running a quick installer and signing in with their university username and password. This setup only needs to be completed once for each device.
  • A new dedicated UCD Guest Wi-Fi network will be available for visitors to campus, and this will replace the existing UCD Wireless Wi-Fi network but will not allow unauthenticated access to UCD systems. Authenticated access to systems will be provided via eduroam.

Please note: There will be no change to the wired network.

Why eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is a globally trusted, secure, and encrypted wireless service designed for the academic community. It is already used in universities and research institutions worldwide, providing seamless access across thousands of participating institutions.

Key Benefits of eduroam:

  • Enhanced security – Fully encrypted connections protect your information and UCD credentials.
  • Improved privacy – Safeguards your data while using campus wireless networks.
  • Seamless access – Stay connected to UCD digital resources reliably and securely on campus and at eduroam-enabled institutions globally.
  • Convenience – Set up once and connect automatically (opens in a new window)wherever eduroam is available.

If you are not already using eduroam, we strongly recommend making the switch now to ensure continued Wi-Fi access. You will find all the information you need in this (opens in a new window)knowledge article.
