Upcoming Student MFA Rollout & Planned Service Outage

Thursday, 13 November, 2025

IT Services will commence the rollout of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to all student accounts over the coming months, to ensure better security of these accounts.

In preparation for this rollout, two changes are planned over Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 November. These are:

  1. A new screen will always be presented to all users when logging into UCD Connect services to ask users to indicate if they are a current student or not.

  1. Students will sign in using Microsoft Authentication and no longer use the existing SSO screen. A key change is that they will log in using their email address rather than their UCD Connect username.
All Other Users (Including Staff) will continue to sign in using Duo MFA as before

This change will result in possible disruption to student login to Microsoft services only from 13:00 on Tuesday 18 to 09:00 on Wednesday 19 November. Communication will also be issued to all students ahead of this change.

Further detail on this new process is available on this (opens in a new window)Knowledge Article and also on the Microsoft MFA Project Website regarding the broader MFA rollout.
