UCD graduates win NUI awards for published works in history

Posted December 01, 2017

Graduates of UCD have won both publication prizes at the (opens in a new window)National University of Ireland (NUI) awards.

The awards recognise the “brightest minds and talents” in Irish scholarship. They have been presented to students and graduates of the NUI since its foundation in 1908.

UCD graduate Professor Karl Theodore Hoppen, Emeritus Professor of History at University of Hull, won the Irish Historical Research Prize for his book Governing Hibernia: British Politicians and Ireland 1800-1921 ((opens in a new window)Oxford University Press).

Awarded every two years, the prize honours the best new work of Irish historical research. Only first-time publications are accepted.

Dr Niamh Wycherley, a postdoctoral researcher at NUI Galway, won the Publication Prize in Irish History for The Cult of Relics in Early Medieval Ireland ((opens in a new window)Brepols Publishers). Dr Wycherley completed her PhD at University College Dublin.

Three UCD graduates also received Special Commendation Prizes for their publications.

In the Irish Historical Research Prize section, Dr Carla King was honoured for Michael Davitt: After the Land League, 1882-1906 ((opens in a new window)UCD Press) and Professor Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin, UCD School of History, for Catholic Europe, 1592-1648, Centre and Peripheries ((opens in a new window)Oxford University Press).

Dr Conor Mulvagh, a lecturer in the UCD School of History, received a Special Commendation Prize for The Irish Parliamentary Party at Westminster, 1900 – 18 ((opens in a new window)Manchester University Press) in the Publication Prize in Irish History category. Dr Mulvagh received both his undergraduate degree and PhD from UCD.

The recipients of the NUI awards showed “exceptional ability”, said Dr Maurice Manning, Chancellor of the NUI. Their success was reward for “intense effort, a passion for their chosen field, and a keen commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.”

A total of 145 students or graduates were honoured at the annual ceremony. Of those, 49 were from University College Dublin.

The member institutions of the National University of Ireland include University College Dublin; University College Cork; NUI Galway; Maynooth University; Royal College of Surgeons; Uversity; National College of Art and Design; Burren College of Art and Design; Institute of Public Administration; St Angela’s College, Sligo and Shannon College of Hotel Management.
