4 June 2025

(opens in a new window)Professor Brendan Murphy has been elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the world’s largest community of statisticians and data scientists.

The only Ireland-based researcher currently holding this fellowship, Professor Murphy, from the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics, is also the first Ireland-based recipient since 1960 and the only European elected this year.

Founded in 1839, the ASA aims to advance research, science and technology; promote sound statistical practice; inform public policy and contribute to data-driven decisions. Its members are based in more than 90 countries.

“I am very happy to be elected as a Fellow of the ASA in recognition of my contributions to the subject of statistics,” said Professor Murphy.

“The ASA is one of the leading international statistical societies, and it provides an important leadership role within the subject.”

“Professor Murphy’s election as a Fellow of the ASA is a significant international honour,”  added (opens in a new window)Professor Nial Friel, Head of the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics.

“It is a strong endorsement of the world-class work happening in statistics, data science and AI at UCD.”

The ASA Fellow designation is a significant and prestigious recognition in the statistical community. Each year, the ASA Committee on Fellows may elect up to one-third of one percent of the association’s membership as fellows.

Nominees must demonstrate an established reputation and have made outstanding contributions to statistical science in research, education, industry, government, or service to the ASA and the broader profession.

Professor Murphy has taught at UCD since 2007. He is also a former President of the Irish Statistical Association.
