Practice Learning at UCD’s Professional Master of Social Work (PMSW) Programme

UCD offers a Professional Master of Social Work (PMSW) which is a two-year postgraduate programme offering generic professional education and training in Social Work. The Practice Learning Team is made up of the Placement Allocations Manager, the Director of Professional Practice and Practice tutors along with the valued input from the Senior Programme Manager.

As part fulfilment of the PMSW qualification, a 14-week student social work placement is organised by the Practice Learning Team in January of each academic year.

We believe that it is essential to grow and change to meet the demands students face, the demands of the profession and to ensure that students are ready for placement.

A two-day Practice Teacher workshop is held every January in UCD prior to the commencement of the student placements. This workshop enables new Practice Teachers to prepare for assessing and evaluating student performances for the first time and the opportunity for experienced Practice Teachers to upskill. Further support throughout the placement is arranged for Practice Teachers to monitor how placements are progressing.

CORU’s Standards of Proficiency underpin our Professional Master of Social Work and all practice learning experiences. Our programme places significant value on effective professional supervision to promote and develop reflective learning and on the integration of social work theories, methods and skills in practice contexts. Practice learning experiences would not be possible without the investment of time and commitment from professionally qualified social workers working as Practice Teachers and Practice Tutors.  The School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice is indebted to their valuable contribution to tomorrow’s professionally qualified social workers and looks forward to their continued future collaboration.

We can be contacted at the details below for any placement-related queries or interest in providing a student social work placement.
